Valley Line West LRT, Utility Relocation Program
Client:
City of Edmonton
Location:
Edmonton, Alberta
Year:
2021-2025
Project Scope
As part of the 14-kilometre Valley Line West LRT expansion in Edmonton, Whissell completed extensive drainage alterations and underground relocations along major arterial corridors including 87 Avenue and Meadowlark Road. The contract grew as Whissell's strong early performance earned additional work packages, a direct reflection of client confidence in Whissell's execution capability. The scope included supply and installation of nearly 10,000 linear metres of sanitary and storm sewer ranging from 100mm to 1050mm in diameter, at depths up to 6 metres.
The project also included installation and relocation of over 400 catch basins and manholes (600mm to 2100mm diameter), a 1050mm flared end outfall, sewer bypass pumping systems, and new underground infrastructure servicing the Lewis Farms Transit Centre.
- ~10,000 LM of sanitary and storm sewer (100mm to 1050mm diameter) at depths up to 6 m
- 400+ catch basins and manholes (600mm–2100mm diameter) installed and relocated
- 1050mm flared end outfall and sewer bypass pumping systems
- New underground infrastructure for the Lewis Farms Transit Centre
- Full traffic accommodation and pedestrian safety management in live arterial corridors
Challenge & Mitigation
Work was executed in live traffic corridors where full road closures were not permitted, requiring continuous traffic accommodation alongside active LRT construction. Additional complexity arose from working near primary power lines, water transmission mains, and environmentally sensitive areas. Whissell coordinated closely with the City of Edmonton and the MIP joint venture to sequence utility relocations around transit construction milestones without service interruption.
Value Add Solution
Due to Whissell's strong early performance, the client awarded additional work packages, growing the contract value a substantial increase that reflects Whissell's reputation as Alberta's most experienced LRT underground utility relocation contractor.
