Fish Creek West Sub Trunk Capacity Upgrade
Client:
City of Calgary
Location:
Calgary, Alberta
Year:
2023
Project Scope
Whissell Contracting Ltd. executed the Fish Creek West Sub Trunk Capacity Upgrade, a major sanitary infrastructure project designed to increase trunk sewer capacity serving the Tsuut'ina Nation (TNN), Woodbine, Woodlands, and Canyon Meadows communities in southwest Calgary.
- Construction of a new large-diameter sanitary trunk line to increase system capacity for multiple southwest Calgary communities
- Significant open-cut excavation for deep trunk sewer installation
- Microtunnelling operations for trenchless sections of the alignment
- Surface works, grading, and removal and replacement of surface improvements
- Traffic accommodation and community interface management throughout construction
Challenge & Mitigation
The project required coordination across multiple community boundaries and involved both open-cut and trenchless construction methods within a constrained urban environment. Managing the transition between open excavation and microtunnelling operations, while maintaining traffic flow and minimizing disruption to adjacent residential areas, required detailed sequencing and phasing plans developed collaboratively with the City of Calgary.
Value Add Solution
Whissell's combined expertise in both open-cut deep utility installation and microtunnelling allowed the team to self-perform across all construction methods, reducing interface risk between contractors and maintaining a unified quality and safety management approach throughout the project.
