Project Scope
Whissell served as a subcontractor for the Maverick YYC Warehouse project a large-scale Amazon distribution centre civil infrastructure package near Calgary International Airport. The project required the rapid completion of 100,000 m³ of site grading followed immediately by the installation of approximately 8,000 m of deep utility infrastructure, all within a compressed seasonal construction window.
- 100,000 m³ of site grading completed within a four-week period
- ~8,000 m of storm, sanitary, water, and high-pressure fire protection piping up to 1,350 mm diameter at depths to 6.5 m
- Storm Cultech Storage Tank installation
- Construction of a permanent entrance across a stormwater pond via an earthen causeway with embedded concrete culverts requiring isolation of the construction area, removal of unsuitable material, and causeway construction before restoring water flow
- Sub-grade pavement preparation
- Mid-project expansion of an existing pump station added to scope
Challenge & Mitigation
Work commenced in late fall and carried through winter, requiring specialized site logistics planning and flexible work plans to accommodate inclement weather and material supply constraints. A mid-project scope addition the expansion of an existing pump station was negotiated and integrated into the overall program without impacting the original project completion date, demonstrating Whissell's adaptability under tight schedule pressure.
Value Add Solution
Whissell's ability to complete 100,000 m³ of grading in four weeks mobilizing sufficient equipment and crew to meet the developer's aggressive schedule was the critical enabler for the entire project. By aligning the site services sequencing plan with the vertical building schedule, Whissell ensured that underground infrastructure was in place precisely when needed, avoiding any delay to the building construction program.
