Project Scope
Whissell served as civil Subcontractor for the Castlerock Ridge and Riverview Wind Farm project a 32-tower wind energy facility requiring comprehensive civil infrastructure construction including road networks, tower foundations, and drainage systems across a large rural site.
- 16 km of access road construction to support turbine delivery and crane operations
- Excavation and backfill of 32 tower foundations and associated crane pads
- 2.5 km of culvert installation ranging from 120 mm to 450 mm CSP diameter
- Geotechnical testing and compaction verification for all foundation and road works
- Coordination with turbine erection contractor and multiple concurrent trades
Challenge & Mitigation
Inclement weather during the construction program created repeated disruptions to earthworks and foundation operations, requiring adaptive sequencing to maintain progress across the 32-tower site. Coordinating Whissell's civil scope with the turbine erection contractor and other trades operating simultaneously across the site required continuous communication and flexible work planning to prevent conflicts and maintain safe working conditions.
Value Add Solution
Whissell's self-performance of the full civil scope roads, foundations, and drainage under a single contract eliminated interface risk between multiple civil subcontractors and provided the project owner with a single point of accountability for all ground-level works. This integrated delivery model allowed for rapid resequencing when weather events disrupted planned work areas.
